The Power of Sports

I have never truly figured out why some people think that playing sports in school is so bad...truly, I don't get it. Yes, I understand that some kids don't put the same time and effort into school...but who knows if they would put that time into school anyway. I was always able to do both...I loved sports and actually liked school. I can't begin to tell you the lessons I learned by doing both...so many life lessons. One of the biggest I learned (and it came from my college bball days)...that life isn't always fair-that there are winners and losers; not everyone wins-that there are obstacles to overcome...and I think that is all relevant today as a working person. Perseverance is key...when things don't go your way, you don't give up...you keep going. Not to mention the lessons of time management...heck, we all have several aspects of life we all juggle. (see my previous post of feeling overwhelmed) Time management is one of the biggest things I learned in school...and the list could keep going.
My reason for thinking along these lines today...a conversation with my husband regarding a child that used to wrestle for him. This kid always quit, wasn't making the grades, would always come back out for wrestling...etc. Skip a few years to this kid placing in the state championships 2 years in a row, including this year. This young man transferred schools a couple of years ago, but is at a great public school...and has been a part of their winning football team and a leader on his new wrestling team. I am so proud of him (knowing how he started and where he came from). But it also says something about sports...he has been around winners, which you hope he continues throughout life. Not only that, but he has become a winner all by himself. Wrestling is a sport that is all about you and your skills...congrats to this young man and many more that did well at State this year.
